PLACE-BASED EDUCATION
Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Climate Action Planning Workshop for Small Business Leaders
This curriculum design is an example of reflection in action because it asks leaders of the local economy to reflect on their greater values and beliefs about the environment and their role in its overall health.
FALL ECOLOGY
Froglandia, and Wood Growth, and Finally Photosynthesis!
After struggling to shrink questions down to a size that can be studied, I learned that I’m the kind of scientist who is fascinated by the big picture. While it can be difficult to conduct an experiment to determine the true value of photosynthesis at a global scale; or determine the exact timeline of the changing climate into the future based on every change in parts-per-million of CO2, I can investigate the tiny elements of those systems, such as wood growth or weather, and wonder what those tiny inquiries become at a global scale, the big picture.

TEAM LEADERSHIP
Tying Knots & Asking Tough Questions
I suppose my philosophy on leadership after the MOSS program has grown to embody the words of Theodore Roosevelt: “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” Be ready to swing hard for the greater good, and always show up with a humble disposition, prepared to speak truth to what we do wrong.
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION
There's a lot to hate about Climate Change
What I know is that within the communication of Science as it grows and improves for an audience of ‘normal people,’ there have to be spaces and storylines made and reserved for heartbreak, exasperation, mourning, and brokenness. There has to be space for the ‘existential crises’ to be screamed about - because they occupy the space in people’s hearts and minds and struggles, oftentimes with a heavier weight than facts or figures or legal decisions or rules. The personal pain and fear and anger we feel - maybe, just maybe... can be met with the same love that healing the future of the planet should be made of.

TEACHING PRACTICUM
K-5 Outdoor Science School
1) Not everyone you communicate with or teach is going to like you, and that’s okay;
2) Nowhere near everyone is going to listen to what you have to say, and only a few of the ones that do listen will actually care to remember - that’s also okay;
3) very few things are actually a REALLY BIG DEAL.
WINTER ECOLOGY
There's a Cost to Calling This Place Home
When you live in an environment that experiences Winter, with snow, dependably, you must adapt to the changing seasons. While Plants and Animals adapt to life in the cold using biological, physical, and geographical solutions, humans have chosen to fight the cold with Fire. At MOSS, that fire to keep warm comes from a combination Propane and Electricity, which at some point in their use produce Greenhouse Gas Emissions. This study of human phenology identifies the environmental cost of calling MOSS home, year round.
